Set in the 1930s rural Italy where fascism reigned supreme, a depressed sickly teenage boy Alberto has just dropped out of medical school and he is trying to escape from the farm where he is staying with his family. Alberto is constantly tormented by his fascist overbearing father Guido who beats him up for being a weakling. The wealthy matriarch of the farm is Guido's sister Floriana, Alberto's aunt, who controls the finances of the household. Alberto is aunt Floriana's favourite beneficiary and when she dies she will leave the farm and the surrounding estate to Alberto. One day Alberto's cousin sister beautiful Gloria, a novice painter, comes to stay at the farm for her summer holiday. Her presence lights up Alberto's life as the two of them had a very pleasant romantic childhood together. When Guido suspects that Gloria and Alberto are going to elope together, in anger he rapes Gloria right in front of Alberto. That incident makes Gloria terminates her stay at the farm. With the presence of Guido spoiling the peaceful atmosphere at the house, Alberto, Floriana and Anna (Alberto's mother) decide on a course of action to get rid of Guido permanently.
